Olds is very honset, very raw, she opens herself up and with her grace,
forgiveness and empathy to all, including herself, allows you to heal with her. She explicitly writes about human faults with
such pure openess those faults almost become beautiful. Her unique style and choice of topics brings you
to stare reality in the face.
A great
example of her beautiful, soft love for humanity in it's most repulsive character:
"I feel as if I am there, near her,
and am seeing, through her, the horror of the human,
as if she is transparent, holding
no gaze to herself. There were people not
crying, just looking, she says, then she says
so much about us is unbearable.
We talk a long time, eventually
we even laugh, we are coming back
up as if from inside the ground,
I try to tell her it was not weakness
in her, that it was love she felt,
the sanctuary of each life and the terror
and dread of our species."
